I was a child
with a file.
Someone read it, decided what I was worth, and wrote a word on it that was not true. Thirty-five years later, I teach people what to do now that machines make those decisions at scale.
The week that decided everything
When I was nine, my mother handed me a manila folder. Across the side, in large red letters, was one word: UNADOPTABLE.
I thought it meant that if I became a burden, she could take me back to the baby store.
By nine I had moved more than thirty times. I still can't tell you what street I grew up on. There were too many.
That same week I sat down at the one computer in the school library and figured out how to print a Happy Birthday banner. The dot matrix printer clattered for forty-five minutes. I was hooked.
The same week a child was told a system had decided she wasn't worthy, she found the thing that would build her entire life.
Technology on one side. Human potential on the other. I have lived at that intersection ever since.
What my mother taught me
The doctors gave my mother three years.
She decided a diagnosis was not a destiny. Sometimes that meant switching doctors. Sometimes it meant asking for a copy of all her medical records, walking out, and finding someone new.
She wanted to live long enough to meet my children. They were three and five when she passed.
Her mind never gave up. Her body just got tired.
She lived twenty-three.
She was teaching me the right to look at a verdict issued about your life and say, not yet, and not by you.
Why I'm the one explaining this
Thirty-five years in technology, watching systems make judgments about people. It's faster now, at a scale we've never seen, with enormous confidence and almost no accountability.
The people who have been labeled are the ones who notice when a system labels someone else. That instinct is not a soft skill. Right now it's the scarcest capability in most buildings.
My gift isn't that I'm technical. It's that I can take the things that make smart adults shut down and make them make sense.
I explain everything as though I'm explaining it to my mother. If she could understand it, anyone can.
The part I don't usually say out loud
For most of my career I worked behind big logos. IBM. Names you'd recognize. When I walked into a room, I walked in behind their name. Then I started my own business, and had to negotiate on my own merits.
That's when the gap showed up. Self-efficacy I had in abundance. Self-worth was another matter. I undercharged for years. It took client after client telling me I was amazing before I believed it — and even then I didn't charge enough.
I meet a version of that woman constantly. Brilliant. Credentialed. The person everyone depends on. Quietly wondering how much longer she can keep pouring this much of herself into a place that benefits from her without seeing her.
That's the message I spend my life delivering now. AI is just the vehicle.
You deserve it.
You are worthy.
You are great.
The receipts
I've been in the room.
Not as a vendor with a deck. As the person these organizations brought in when they had to prepare their people for something none of them fully understood yet.
These aren't here to validate me. I spent a long time believing the logo was the credential. It wasn't. They're here because I know what's being decided about your workforce right now.
